But I do think, having observed the carers relatives have had looking after them, and knowing a number of carers, that this isnt ‘just’ empathy. It’s experience, it’s understanding how to give dignity to people, how to encourage and assist, how to make conversation with people who might be living with alternative realities. Those are real skills. Such a travesty that they arent rewarded with decent pay for what is the most important job in the world. I read the other day about the owner of a care home chain payung himself £21 million over 4 years while his emoloyees are getting minimum wage, and are short staffed.
